I overheard someone on public transit today who said that until they see buds starting on the trees, it is nowhere close to spring. I agree with you mystery man, the trees don’t lie. Dreams of picturesque dew drops are haunting me. Perhaps it was the warm glow of sunlight this evening or my endless planning to go on a holiday, but folks, I went out hunting for a succulent out-of-season melon.

This winter season sweets haven’t tempted me as they usually do. Cookies and cake have made way for the whole grain gluten free muffin recipe I have been perfecting.  Fresh on the heels of reading Spirit Junkie, I was reminded of my tendency to put work, social obligations, errands, finance planning first and foremost. Planning and fluctuating task lists will always afoot, so you’ve got to arm yourself with food to bring you joy and clean fuel.

Matcha is bringing the antioxidants, maca is levelling out our adrenals, ginger is regulating our circulation and killing off some bad news bacteria, cucumber is settling our stomach and our skin.

Shed your muffin top and juice up some of the Dew Drop.

Dew Drop Juice

half of a ripe honeydew melon

1 ruby red grapefruit, organic

half of a medium sized cucumber

a 1 inch junk of fresh ginger

1 teaspoon of powdered maca

½ tsp of organic matcha powder

Combine ingredients in a blender until smooth, run through a sieve or nut milk bag, for an extra silky, smooth juice. If you have a juicer,  juice the produce and then put it in a blender for a quick blitz to combine the powders.

We had a dose of real winter weather last week, while I was skipping and smiling down the streets my fellow city dwellers had their grumpy bird faces on. Needless to say people haven’t exactly gotten into the holiday spirit over here in the Big Smoke.

December just feels busy, doesn’t it? I bet we could all use a trip to the beach right about now.

Sunday Pancakes & Small Successes

This week hasn’t been an easy one. At the eleventh hour I received notice that I had qualified for a funding opportunity that was completely out of my wheel house amongst a laundry list of other last minute items. Rather than clearing my schedule, I decided to try and do it all. Today is a true practice of managing my stress and auto-immune diseases during real life circumstances.

If it wasn’t for my month of dedicated movement and Melissa Ramos’ 14 day Stress Detox I decided to take on,  I am sure that I would have had a bit of a meltdown. Today is the last day to sign up, won’t you join me?

Latkes and Letting Yourself Win

Even the best laid plans run into roadblocks. I started my celebration early this month and got quite smug with myself after a barrefit class. Of all things I threw my hip and lower back out trying to wrangle a sick cat into a carrier for a vet visit. It’s funny how delicate and fleeting the body is even when you are admist feeling on top of your game. Four days of committed movement is a huge feat for me considering walking around the block or a casual half hour on a stationery bike was a big deal just a month and a half ago. Last week I hit up three out of my allotted four movement classes in the face of a silly yet painful injury. I spent hours beating myself up this week thinking I should have pushed myself more, feeling even a bit of shame knowing that I didn’t meet my goal. There are so many colloquial phrases to draw from here, for me “you are your own worst enemy” flashed to the fore. To say the least, I lost sight of being gentle and realistic with myself. Even with all of the planning in the world, life will still throw you a curveball.

Thankfully I had a very wise man at my side when I tried to awkwardly step into my athletic gear and hobble out the door. His words quickly silenced my frantic thoughts – “sometimes you need to let yourself win”.

I promised you something tasty to eat the other day, but instead one of my favourite felines got very sick and had to be rushed off to the animal hospital. Luckily, he is now slowly on the mend and I had the chance to take note of what I have managed to eat and sip on lately.

Crushing on Cashews.

Despite the soon onslaught of Moustaches, being just two days away from November has me thinking about the Divine Feminine thanks to my dear friend Sarah. Between her DIY bucket list, skipping across the pond to live the expat life and spearheading a virtual book club – our long overdue hangout earlier this month left me with a reinvigorated to find pleasure and purpose in the little things.

I cook each and every day without fail – no excuses. For the sake of my health and my wallet it just doesn’t make sense for me to eat out on a regular basis. But, I still manage to take the “easy way out” and buy certain things at the grocery store. That got me pondering low effort, high yield possibilities that give the illusion of convenience. Soaking nuts overnight, a blitz in the blender and a press through a sieve. If that’s not easy I don’t know what is.

How d’ya like them apples?

This year I took fruit picking to the next level – well, for a Northern girl that is. Growing up I longed for sweet Canadian peaches, pears and apples. But, the growing season in my neck of the woods wasn’t conducive to that kind of fare. Funny thing about living in the Bay is that we had more ready access to B.C. fruit than the significantly closer Southern Ontario counterparts.

Growing up I can’t remember much of any apples to speak of – crabapples grow at my mother’s childhood home, and that was as close as we got. We were always throwing together some kind of jelly admits snacking and throwing the cores at each other for fun. Crababbles weren’t quite as inspiring in the kitchen as they seem to be these days.

Now, this year I got organized. Peaches and Apples were finally within my grasp! Not to mention the purple mulberries that I nonchalantly picked off neighbourhood trees throughout the city.

First I was treated to sweet, freestone peaches from a family friend’s Christmas Tree farm that just happened to be adorned with a handful of trees. And now, apples! Let’s take a bite out of life, shall we?
